What You Should Know About KVPY Examination




The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a scholarship program that is funded by the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India, for students who are exceptionally talented and highly inspired to pursue basic science courses and research career in science. Started in 1999, KVPY is a National Program of Fellowship in Basic Sciences offering contingency and scholarship grants up to the Pre-Ph.D. level to selected students.
This is meant to encourage students to take up research careers. The main objective of the program is to select students with talent and an aptitude for research and help them realize their potential. This will assure the growth of the ideal minds for research and development in the country. Students who clear the KVPY written exam and interview become eligible for direct admission in top institutes like IIT and the various IISERs.
The selection of students is made from students in XI standard to 1st year in any undergraduate Program in Basic Sciences. The KVPY 2017 test includes the following three streams:
  • SA- Students studying Science stream in Class 11th.
  • SX- Students pursuing Science stream in Class 12th.
  • SB- Students studying Science stream in the first year of graduation.

KVPY Eligibility  Criteria
      
      Candidates should be Indian Citizens.
2.      Stream SA: candidates have to complete their 10th class with Science & Mathematics subjects. They have to secure at least 80% marks (70% marks for SC/ST/PWD) aggregate in the qualifying examination.
3.       
      Stream SX: candidates have to pass 10th class with minimum 80% marks (70% for SC/ST/PWD) in aggregate in Mathematics & Science subjects. Candidates also have to qualify the 10+2 examination with Science subjects & secure at least 60% marks (50% for SC/ST/PWD category) in aggregate.

4.      Stream SB: candidates have to complete their 10+2 examination & obtain minimum 60% marks (50% marks for SC/ST/PWD) in aggregate in Science Subjects. Candidates also have to pass their 1st-year final examination & secure at least 60% marks (50% marks for SC/ST/PWD).

KVPY Selection Procedure

Based on the recent 2017 examination and the KVPY general instructions, the selection procedure consists of two stages, namely; an aptitude test and an interview. In order to get shortlisted for the KVPY scholarship, students need to qualify both these stages.

Aptitude Test

After the inspection of the application forms and meeting the eligibility criteria for the different streams, all the eligible students are called for an aptitude test conducted in both Hindi and English languages at different centers across the country.

Interview

Based on the candidates’ performance in the aptitude test, the shortlisted students will be asked to appear for an interview as the final stage of the selection process. The interview is conducted in order to assess the candidates’ knowledge in science and research field. Post the interviews, list of the final selected candidates will be released. Candidates’ overall performance in aptitude test and interview will be considered for awarding the KVPY scholarship.
